The Capriccio group had the pleasure to host Samit Roy from The University of Alabama, who is William D. Jordan Professor and very active in the field of fracture simulations across multiple length and time scales. Within our seminar, he gave a talk on “Predicting Fracture Toughness in Polymers using Capriccio-Based Atomistic-Continuum Concurrent Coupling Technique”. In his group, he has implemented very important extensions of the Capriccio method, which he discussed during his presentation. In this regard, he also addressed crucial aspects of minimum crack lengths necessary to obtain fracture than just material rupture. Since these critical crack lengths are currently, at least for polymers, without the feasibility of pure atomistic simulations, the Capriccio method provides a very helpful means to overcome these spatial limitations and to perform numerical studies of crack onset and propagation of polymers with molecular resolution in the vicinity of the crack tip.

We thank Samit Roy very much for his insights and the very valuable discussion. We are looking forward to further fruitful exchange!
